TRU LOVE is a sparkling love story about the lives of three women, and the realization that when you finally meet your true love, rules and roles don't apply. Alice (Kate Trotter), a beautiful 60 year old, has recently lost her husband and, still coming to terms with the loss, has on the spur of the moment decided to visit her daughter Suzanne (Christine Horne) in the big city. When Suzanne – whose relationship with her mother is already conflicted – is too busy to spend time with her, she enlists friend Tru (Shauna MacDonald), with whom she has a past, to babysit Alice while she works.
A commitment-phobic lesbian who seems to live from mattress to mattress, Tru forms an unlikely but deeply touching bond with Alice, helping her to pick herself up and move on with her life, and the possibility of a relationship between the two sparks into life. When Suzanne witnesses a tender moment between her mother and friend, her subsequent actions stress the relationship of all three women, leading to a heartbreaking climax.
Movies about loss and love are all too common and it takes something particularly special to stand out. In capturing the emotions of loss, love and acceptance so provocatively and accurately – both in the script and the performances – this is one of those rare standouts. TRU LOVE reminds us that love, no matter what kind, is about making ourselves vulnerable, about finding someone to love with all your heart, and when your heart breaks, being glad that you loved enough for it to break wide open.
